Sustainable beef coalition frames draft principles

Date: 29 Mar 2014

The Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (GRSB) has produced draft principles which are open for comment until mid May. The group brings together companies such as Walmart and McDonalds along with NGOs such as WWF and the Rainforest Alliance.

The initiative comes at a time when there has been more debate around the environmental benefits of reducing meat consumption, due to the contribution of livestock to greenhouse gas emissions. The draft principles suggest that beef can be a socially responsible and environmentally sound product and identify what needs to happen to make it so.

The Roundtable has said that it is not intending to create a certification programme as have similar initiatives, such as that on palm oil. Instead it aims "to provide a common baseline understanding of sustainable beef that national roundtables and other initiatives can use to meet their needs."
