Uganda: Orange withdraws advertising from anti-gay newspaper
Date: 11 Mar 2014
Global telecom company Orange has withdrawn its advertising from the Ugandan tabloid newspaper that has pursued a vigorous anti-gay campaign over recent months.
The paper most recently printed the names of 200 people that it said were "suspected homosexuals", following the passing of legislation that makes homosexuality an offence punishable by up to a life term in prison.
The campaign group All Out, which had been lobbying Orange to withdraw, celebrated the move as a victory. It is not known how much revenue the advertisements represented to Red Pepper.
