India: Balco executives arrested over chimney collapse

Date: 18 Nov 2009

Balco chimney collapse

Police have arrested three executives, including a former vice president, of Bharat Aluminium Co (Balco) following a fatal accident which killed 40 workers. The three have been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

The chimney at Balco's thermal plant in Korba collapsed during heavy storms in September. Police have said that they think it likely that further arrests will follow.

The chimney was being constructed by Chinese power firm SEPCO. No SEPCO officials have yet been targeted by police.

Balco has said that it was surprised by the police action, since it had been co–operating fully with inquiries into the incident. The company is state–run, and British firm Vedanta Resources owns a 49 percent stake.
