US: Intel accused of 'bribery and coercion' by NY attorney–general
Date: 5 Nov 2009
Intel has been targeted in a lawsuit detailing how it had allegedly maintained a dominant market position by using bribery and coercion to stifle fair competition.
Andrew Cuomo, the New York attorney–general, released a statement saying that consumers had been hurt by the company's actions because they had effectively been robbed of better products for lower prices.
The suit aims to recover damages from the company and to prevent any future similar acts. It is not the first accusation of its kind – Intel is being investigated by the Federal Trade Commission and has found itself in hot water with trade authorities in Europe and Japan, and it is currently appealing a 1.1bn euros fine for anti–competitive practices.
According to the suit, Intel paid large amounts to manufacturers to ensure they agreed exclusive use of Intel chips. It conversely punished those who worked too closely with its biggest competitors.
Intel has denied the claims, and said that it will defend itself in court.
