Japan: False labeling in the spotlight again for Nippon Meat Packers
Date: 30 Jun 2009
Nippon Meat Packers and Nippon Flour Mills have been ordered to correct misleading labeling of fish and frozen food products.
According to Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Nippon Meat Packers sold around 16 tons of fish products with labels describing ingredients as including high end crabs. The product actually contained cheaper crabs.
Nippon Flour Mills sold 2,000 tons of frozen food using a similar deception.
Five years ago, Nippon Meat Packers had to slash production of processed foods by 40 percent following a boycott by retailers in reaction to a beef mislabeling scandal. Imported beef had been falsely labeled in order to be entered into a government buyback programme.
The company's website describes its management principles as including "act with noble ideals and the determination to achieve them".
