Saudi Arabia: Tobacco companies face compensation suit from smoker
Date: 11 Jun 2009
A lawsuit has been brought against two unnamed tobacco companies seeking $10m in damages for damage to health the plaintiff said he suffered from smoking. The case, reminiscent of a number brought in the US in recent years, is the first of its kind to arise in Saudi Arabla.
The suit has been filed by a businessman, Abu Abdullah, who suffered throat cancer and had part of his throat and vocal chords removed in surgery, leaving him unable to speak. His medical report showed that his ill health had been directly caused by his consumption of tobacco products.
Abu Abdullah has said that some of the damages money would be used to build a hospital for treating people with tobacco addiction.
