France: 45 percent support workers who kidnap bosses

Date: 7 Apr 2009

French protests at Sony

An opinion poll has shown that 45 percent of French citizens believe that radical action by workers facing pay cuts or redundancies to kidnap their bosses to force concessions is acceptable. 50 percent believe it to be unacceptable.

The action, which has featured in worker disputes increasingly in recent days, has seen senior executives making concessions and has even gained the sympathy of President Sarkozy – although he made it clear that the action should stop.

Executives at Sony, Caterpillar and 3M are amongst those that have been held against their will. Some have had food kept from them, and at Caterpillar the four executives were sleep deprived by workers facing 700 redundancies.

While TV documentaries focus on children working in textiles, an altogether tougher, more difficult issue gets little attention. Watch this - and you'll never buy paving for your patio or driveway without asking a few questions first.
