UK: 'Unlawful' tobacco pricing leads to 225m pound fine by OFT

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has fined two tobacco companies and nine retailers a total of 225m pounds for "unlawful" tobacco pricing practices.

The UK's Office of Fair Trading has suggested that tobacco firms and supermarkets including Asda-Walmart, Sainsbury and Tesco, have been involved in an arrangement to swap information on future tobacco pricing which, whilst falling short of price-fixing, had the same effect for customers and would be, if proved, illegal.

Canada: Imperial Tobacco accused of involvement in smuggling

According to court documents, Imperial Tobacco is alleged to have been involved in a cigarette smuggling network in the early 1990s and to have defrauded the government of more than $600m in taxes.

Canada: Tobacco Act survives challenge from cigarette manufacturers

Canada's three biggest cigarette manufacturers have failed in an attempt to challenge the 1997 Tobacco Act as unconstitutional. The companies had argued against the legislation on the grounds that it prohibited them from advertising their brands to consumers.

Canada: Row over tobacco donation to university ethics programme

Calls are being made for a $150,000 donation to a Toronto University ethics programme from Imperial Tobacco to be returned.
